Darien named one of 10 Georgia Charming Small Towns by Travel + Leisure Magazine

Darien was spot lighted in the October issue of Travel Leisure magazine in a story, “Ten Charming Small Towns in Georgia,” by Sky Sherman. The magazine identified the 10 towns as the best small towns in Georgia, with all having a population of fewer than 12,000.  Darien was named first in the listing of towns. Sherman describes Darien as “The quiet coastal town of Darien has an allure all of it s own. Founded in 1736, its home to old live oaks, Gullah-Geechee culture, and picturesque views along the Altamaha River–not to mention great seafood, golfing and pristine nature.” Second on the list was Senoia, southwest of Atlanta, which is famous for where the hit TV show, The Walking Dead, was filmed. The town went from a ghost town to a popular visitor destination.  Dahlonega, in North Georgia and the site of the first major gold rush in the U.S. in the early 1800s, offers “wineries, hunting for antique treasures, waterfalls, a quaint downtown and mountain scenes.”  Jekyll Island is on the list to visit, offering a beach, as well as the historic village packed with history.  Madison, south of Athens, offers a town with beautiful old homes, with plenty of boutiques, restaurants, antiques and the first certified Forest Therapy Trail in the U.S. Blue Ridge is a mountain town near the North Carolina border with a population less than 2,000.  Sherman writes, “Its abundance of restaurants, breweries, shops and art galleries provide the perks of a much bigger destination…Blue Ridge is also a popular spot for leaf-peeping in the fall.”  Vidalia is on the list. It is now famous for the Vidalia onion and holds the Vidalia Onion Festival in the spring and there is the Vidalia Onion Museum to visit. Tallulah Falls has less than 200 people in its town and offers the beautiful scenery of the Tallulah Gorge and waterfalls. Hikers and kayakers are drawn to this area.  Pine Mountain in west Georgia is located near Callaway Gardens. It was the retreat for former President Franklin D. Roosevelt at Little White House.  Helen is located in the mountains of north Georgia and offers a taste of Germany with its Bavarian-style buildings. The town offers hearty German cuisine, beer gardens and polka bands.
